The Great Andalusian Route Stage 8 Granada – Antequera
Stage 8 takes you from the jewel of a city called GRANADA, full of narrow and bustling streets, all combined with its beautiful elegant squares, amazing history and FREE tapas. Granada is the only place in Spain where your tapa is FREE, 4 beers and you’re not hungry anymore .
You leave Granada and head south towards the coast and take what was, many many years ago, the only road to the coast. It’s known locally as La Ruta de la Cabra, the Route of the Goat and once you ride it I think you will undestand why.
You then take the coast road and head for Malaga but before arriving, stop at Blacon de Europa, The Balcony of Europe, from where there are some spectaular building and views.
Back on to the coast road heading for Malaga and literally just when you think your there, turn right and head for the mountains. The road flows beautifully going up and has got some beautiful curves coming down, two of them in particular are what we could call “tie knots”, you literally ride under the road the same road you came down on.
Malaga is another beautiful capital, full of history, pedestrianised streets, bars and tapas, not free tapas though.
Now we have the truly beutiful ride north to Antequera, passing through villages, countryside along what was another main through fare, with it’s curves views and old roman bridge; I can gaurantee that you will enjoy it. An essential stop / detour on this route is El Parque Natural Torcal de Antequera, when you get there you’ll see why because it is TRULY OUTSTANDING and TOTALLY UNIQUE.
The final section of the route is a nice road to finish on, not as technical, flowing along the hilside. At one point you will pass “Fuente de la Teja”, which is a spring with a difference, several watering troughs one could say, and if you think it must have been the most perfect way for you to supply and water your stock. Continuing from there you finally reach the town of ANTEQUERA. Again this is another typical Spanish town, steeped in history, with outstanding architecture. It’s known for its ancient burial mounds, including the Dolmen de Menga, Dolmen de Viera and Tholos de El Romeral. The old Moorish fortress Alcazaba of Antequer and the vast nature preserve of Torcal de Antequera has dramatic limestone tower rock formations.
